The Guilt List

The Guilt List

It's 8:47pm. The kids are finally asleep. And instead of resting, your brain hits play on the nightly replay — every moment you weren't your best self, queued up like a video you never asked to watch.

The voice you snapped in. The game you didn't play. The dinner that burned while you answered one more email.

If you've ever stood in the middle of your living room — surrounded by laundry and good intentions — wondering if you're getting this whole motherhood thing wrong…

Mama, this one's for you.

The list writes itself

Somewhere between breakfast and bedtime, the guilt list writes itself. It doesn't ask permission. It doesn't check the facts. It just shows up — usually around 9pm, usually when you're already running on empty.

It sounds a lot like this:

😢

You yell — then you cry

The words fly out before you can catch them, and the second they land, your hand covers your mouth in regret. You replay it on a loop all night: the look on their face, the pitch of your own voice.

💻

"One second, baby."

Your laptop is open, the deadline is real, and a little hand is pulling at your arm. You say "not right now" more times than you ever wanted to — and every single time, it stings a little.

🥘

The burnt dinner

You pull the pan out of the oven and just… stare. Smoke alarm wailing. Kids watching. You, quietly falling apart on the inside — over a tray of ruined food, of all things.

🧺

The laundry couch

A mountain of clean-but-unfolded clothes, and somehow it whispers that you're failing — even though it's just fabric. Just clothes. Just a Tuesday.

📱

The midnight scroll

The house is finally quiet, and instead of sleeping, you're scrolling. Phone glow on your tired face. Too wired to rest, too exhausted to do anything real with the break — and guilty for needing it at all.

Mom guilt sounds like this

“I shouldn't have raised my voice.”

“I should spend more time playing.”

“I should enjoy every second.”

“I shouldn't need a break.”

It all sounds so reasonable, doesn't it? So true.
But here's the thing about guilt — it only ever shows you one side of the story. And it never tells you the truth.

But here's the truth

You are allowed to feel both.

You can love your children deeply…and still feel overwhelmed.

You can be grateful…and still feel exhausted.

You can be a good mom…and still make mistakes.

Guilt does not mean you're failing.
Sometimes guilt simply means you care.

Read that again. Because if you didn't care — if those moments didn't matter to you — you wouldn't feel a thing. The guilt you're carrying isn't proof that you're doing motherhood wrong. It's proof that your heart is completely in it.

So tonight, when the replay starts, try this: picture the guilt list in your hands. Read it once. And then… set it down.

You're allowed to be overwhelmed and grateful at the same time. You're allowed to love them wildly and still need a minute to breathe. You're allowed to get it wrong sometimes — every single one of us does.

You're not failing, mama. You're caring hard.
And that is the whole job. 🤍

Pass it on

Somewhere tonight, another mama is writing this exact list. Send her the truth.

“What's one thing on your guilt list that you're ready to let go of?”

Drop it in the comments — I read every single one. Let's set these lists down together.
